Property assessments and taxes contribute to the financial stability of our town. Property taxes account for approximately 23% of all revenue that the Town receives. They pay for important municipal services and programs.
Billing, Payment Dates and Interest
The Town processes two property tax bills each year. The first installment or interim tax bill is processed at the end of February and is equal to approximately 50% of the previous year's total taxes. Bills are due 30 days from the mailing date. The final installment or annual tax bill is processed at the end of June and is due 60 days from the mailing date.
Property taxes that remain unpaid after the due date are subject to interest charges at a rate of 1.8% compounded monthly. Property taxes that remain unpaid after December 31 become property tax arrears and will lead to your information being published and legal costs associated with collection.
Payments can be made in person at the Town Office located on the corner of Firth Street and Kingmingya Road, by cheque, credit card, debit card or through the bank.
Anyone wishing to set up regular monthly payments via credit card can complete and return the authorization for automatic debit form.
Property Tax Exemptions
Eligible senior citizens and disabled persons can apply for an exemption from property taxes by completing and returning the application form. Eligibility requirements are outlined in By-law 2692/TAX/22.
Upon application, an eligible senior citizen or disabled person, who is the owner of the eligible property and ordinarily resides in it, will receive a reduction of 50% of the applicable taxes.
Property Tax Mill Rates
Each year, the Town of Inuvik sets the property tax mill rate based on the approved annual budget. The education mill rate is set by the Government of the Northwest Territories each year.
